28. I've come to realize that my life...is a blessing.

You Should Know...

Well, I've gotten my very first ever meme tag by Twitter. I'll have to share with you my love affair with Twitter in another post, but for now, let's tackle the tag...

Lisa of Put It on the List has tagged me with the Six Things Meme. I've actually done this meme before here, and a variation of it with the 7 things, 8 things and even 5 things all over my blog. But, if you don't know by now...I sort of love talking about myself (uh, I'm a blogger after all), so, what the heck, let's do it again!

So, here's what I'm supposed to do. I'm supposed to tell you 6 things about me that nobody knows. UH...see, the thing is...I don't really have any secrets. My life is like an open book, especially on this here blog. So, I'm going to try...

1. I haven't had cheese in 6 weeks. Now, I'm a self-proclaimed cheese-a-holic, I could eat an entire thing of cheese in one sitting, so this is quite the amazing feat, but as part of Jenny Craig, with the exception of a few "cheese-like" ingredients in their prepared meals, I haven't touched cheese in 6 weeks.

2. Today I feel skinny. I'm still only half-way to my goal weight, but today, I've actually tucked my shirt INTO my pants, and don't feel the need to hide my belly. Crap, I feel thinner, if not skinny.

3. I want to start dating again. There, I said it. It's been a long time, and I'm ready. It's time.

4. Sometimes, I get insanely self-conscious and insecure and wonder if everyone things I'm a big fake. I have the most amazing friends, but sometimes, I wonder if they "just put up with me" or if they genuinely like me. I wonder if I can really be as great as they all make me feel I am.

5. Over the last few years, I've developed a green thumb of sorts. I used to kill all plants that ever crossed my threshhold, but lately, I've managed to not only keep some alive, but to actually revive a few and bring them back from the nearly dead. I'm kind of proud of this.

6. I want a dog. No, I'm not getting one. I don't have the lifestyle to be a pet owner right now, but I want one. BADLY!

Okay, that's it, that's my six. Now I'm supposed to tag six people, but I've been a very bad blogger lately, so I feel badly going out and tagging folks I haven't visited in a while...so I'm going to cut the list short at four instead:

1. PBNJM - my cousin and bestie forever and ever.

2. Julia - and yes, I realize I owe her a few memes she's tagged me for as well (I promisse, they're in the works).

3. Frigga - who's posts I miss reading, man, I've got some catching up to do!!!

4. Frances - because I know she's always up for a meme or two!!

Enjoy ladies!!

I also grabbed this meme from Frigga right around the same time...I wasn't tagged for it, but I tagged myself...so, might as wel throw it in here. It's the MeMe of Firsts and Lasts:

First funeral: For the father of a friend of mine, who died from Lou Gherrig’s disease…I was 17 or so…it was horrible

First piercing: and only – ears; oh wait, I’m lying, I got a second hole in each ear at one point, but they got infected and I let them close up

First tattoo: could be happening very very soon…stay tuned

First credit card: probably one of the many I signed up for on spring break in Daytona so I could get free stuff

First kiss: YUCK…read this post where I told you all about it.

First enemy: Stacy Greekopolous (not her real last name). She was evil, and jealous and made 8th grade miserable for me…but I got sweet revenge without even doing anything..maybe I’ll tell you about her someday.

Last car ride: home from work today, in the pouring rain...what fun!

Last kiss: OH, we don’t want to relive that fiasco, can we talk about the one before that instead?

And that's that...Happy Friday everyone. Hop on over to Cafe Karina for the latest "So You Think You Can Dance" recap, and Creative Karina for my latest entry into Pensieve's Poetic License (where she created a whole new poetic form JUST FOR US). Tomorrow stop by for Photo Hunter, and next week I'll have my next installment in my tales of "All The Boys I've Loved".

Thursday Thirteen #52- All About the Shoes

I didn't know about the "alphabet theme" going on at TT today, but we'll just call mine S, for Shoes...For today's Thursday Thirteen, we're going to go back. Back into my archives and a request I made of my readers to ask me questions, so that I could have some blog fodder for NaBloPoMo or something like that. I've managed to answer most of those questions, but there was one that I was saving for a special occasion, because it was all about shoes. And you all know how I feel about shoes. And then, the question got lost somewhere, and I recently unearthed it, and figured it was time.

The question, posed by my friend Qualcosa Di Bello was: "What is your absolute favorite pair of shoes, past and present?

Well, if you know me, then you know that is pretty much an impossible question for me to answer. Asking me to choose a favorite pair of shoes is like asking a mother to tell you her favorite child. No way I can do that and risk offending the feelings of the others. So, in lieu of giving a straight answer, I give you today's Thursday Thirteen, all about my favorite shoes:

1. We'll go to the past first. As I mentioned in this post, I don't actually have really strong memories of "shoes" in my childhood. My love affair with shoes began a bit later in life. But I do remember one particular pair of turquoise blue "jellys" that I was completely in love with. I wish I could show you a photo, but I don't have any here...I should have borrowed one of CandidMama's photo albums. But you remember jellys, right? Boy how I loved mine.

2. Then, in about the 7th grade, I had this fantastic pair of imitation hi-top chuck taylors in baby blue and pink. Laugh if you want, but I loved those things. They earned me the nick-name "Punky" (after Punky Brewster) and I was so darn proud of that.

3. I went to college during the grunge and gangsta rap stage. My style was a mixture of both, so on any given day, you could find me in some serious "shit-kicker" boots, but I had them in all colors and styles, to go with the rest of my eclectic wardrobe.

4. It wasn't until after college that I discovered my love affair with "girly" shoes. And I have never looked back. Here are some (just some) of my current favorites. I've put away my boots (thinking the summer was here...HA!) so of my boots, I have only these to show you:5. Currently, I'm all about the stilletos. These I searched for high and low because I saw this color shoe on some celebs last year, and I just HAD to have them. I love them, but they might just be the most uncomfortable pair of shoes I own...
6. I just LOVE my black and pink ones, how cute are they, seriously?

7. Every woman should own a pair of pink shoes. The picture doesn't do the color of these justice, however...I couldn't get the color to come out right, but they are a very pretty, girly, pink.

8. I've shared these recently with you, they are my brand new "interview" shoes, which I bought to wear with my brand new "interview" suit. They will both make their debut on Friday. OH, did I mention I have a job interview on Friday? Because I do. And it is for a job literally 5 minutes from my house, so if you could all keep me in mind with positive thoughts and all that, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Okay, back to the shoes:

9. And what's a shoe collection without a pair of red shoes?

10. And soon enough, I'll be able to break out the open toed shoes. These are my absolute favorites i that category:

11. Or maybe it's these:

12. Hmmm...could be these sketcher flip-flops,actually, because I practically live in them all summer long:

13. But when all else fails, you can always just go barefoot. Just make sure to get a nice pedicure first. You can thank Sognatrice for the shot of my newly manicured toes, as I was complaining my BFF treated me to a pedi, and then the weathe got to cold to show off my toes, and she suggested I post a photo...so here you go...In all my OPI "I've Red The Script" glory:

Don't you just love my pink jammies?

You Asked For It - Part 4 - Memories

There's a new American Idol recap up at Cafe Karina today. I also finally posted some poetry over at Creative Karina, stop by if you'd like.

Here at Candid Karina this week I've been catching up a bit on memes I've been tagged for, and since I still have some outstanding questions lingering out there that you, my dear readers asked of me WAY back, I thought I'd keep with the catching up theme. So, here's a few more of my answers:

Frigga asked: What are some of your earliest memories of shoe shopping / shoes?

Wow, that’s quite the question…I had to give this one some serious thought, because being a serious shoe-aholic as myself, I’ve actually not ever given much thought as to what it was that triggered my shoe addiction.

Your question forced me to go back and analyze at what point in my life shoes went from being a necessity to an obsession. I blame my mother. I don’t have specific memories of obsessing over shoes as a young child, but I do know that my mother always had me in the most coordinated outfits growing up. Therefore, I always had several pairs of shoes, to wear with matching outfits. If I rack my brain for my earliest memory of shoes, I come up with a pair of turquoise blue jellies I owned when I was about 8 or 9. I loved those things, and can envision the blue outfit I wore them with.

Fast forward a few years, and I remember the “punky Brewster” sneakers I had to have in junior high. Those shoes, and I wish I had a photo of them to share with you, earned me the nickname Punky back then. Once I entered high school, I stopped wearing sneakers completely. In fact, I owned ONE pair of sneakers all through highschool, and they were reserved solely for gym class. I never owned a pair of sneakers again until my 24th birthday, when a boyfriend bought me a pair of Nike’s (which, believe it or not, I still own). I love those things.

But back to high school. I remember a pair of lace-up ankle boots, that I practically lived in. I’m sure I had other shoes as well, but I can’t remember any of them. Right before I started college, I bought my first pair of “open toed” shoes. They were platform wedges, with a peeptoe. It was also in college that I discovered platform sneakers, and shit-kicker boots. It was the late 90’s and shoes with substance were in fashion. I remember that I had serious boots then. And I had them in several colors. So, I’d say it was in college that I truly began my love affair with shoes.

It was after college, however, once I started working in corporate America, in law firms, that I really discovered my obsession with footwear. Working in downtown Boston, with shoe stores galore, and lunch hours to kill window shopping, my shoe collection grew exponentially. I haven’t looked back since. I’ve changed styles with the times, and I’ve also changed my tastes. Where comfort was key while working in the city, now that I have a suburban commute (house to car, car to office, office to car and back), comfort is no longer so much an issue. From stack heels to stilettos I’ve gone. From comfortable to sexy. Give me pointy, and spiky, and I’m hooked.
I just reread what I wrote and see that as always happens when I begin speaking of shoes, I’ve gone off on a tangent and haven’t really answered the original question. My earliest memory of shoes and shoe shopping. The earliest shoes which bring back memories are definitely the blue jellies. I don’t really have an early memory of shoe shopping, however.

But I do have a shoe memory you might like, that doesn’t have much to do with my shoe obsession as it does with Portuguese customs.

I must have been 5 or 6 years old at the time. As far as I knew then, Santa, or “Father Christmas” as he was known in Portugal, was as real as my father. That particular Christmas was spent at my uncle’s family home. The details are vague, but I remember there were a few kids there, among them my two cousins Gangsta and Black Sheep. The family was around, and we were waiting for Father Christmas to show. We had put out our shoes, for that was where Santa left your gifts (sort of like stockings, only we used shoes).

The thing is, I don’t remember ever leaving out a shoe any other Christmas. This may not have been the first, it may not have been the last, but it is the ONLY Christmas I remember the shoe being involved. Anyway, suddenly, we heard it, Santa’s footsteps on the roof. He was there! But he couldn’t see us! So, my father took all the kids into one of the bathrooms to hide. (yeah, I really don’t know why the bathroom was chosen over one of the bedrooms, don’t ask). So we hid in the bathroom for a while, and then the other adults called us out, Santa was gone. And where our shoes used to be, were our gifts. I remember that my shoe was lost in the process, but don’t know if it was ever recovered…like I said the memory is vague on details.

The only thing I remember clearly as if it were yesterday, was the excitement of hearing the footsteps on the roof (my uncle in the attic, I learned later), and the nerves and giggling while we were in the bathroom hiding away.

From Sognatrice: What's your favorite childhood memory?

I had a great childhood, so it’s extremely tough to pick just one favorite. I have many memories that make me smile. A lot of my greatest childhood memories involve my brother. I was almost 9 years old when he entered my life, and I had always wanted a sibling. He became the love of my life instantly. He was my little toy, and I couldn’t get enough of playing with him.

I remember specifically two events. One was a game we played all the time. I would lay a blanket down on the floor, and roll my brother in it, and call him “my little sausage”, and carry him around the house, over my shoulder, wrapped in a blanket, while he would giggle in hysterics. So much did he love this game, that he would bring me the blanket at random times. Just thinking of this I can hear his hysterical giggling, and it warms my heart (and makes me a little teary eyed).

The other story my brother would probably kill me for sharing, but he doesn’t read my blog, so whatever. I’m 9 years old and we’re living in Portugal. My brother is probably 10 or 11 months old. My mother is in the kitchen, and my brother, my father and I are in my bedroom. For some odd reason, I can remember exactly what my brother was wearing that day. He had on a cute little outfit that was knitted by either my mother, or one of my grandmother’s. It was purple and brown. I can see his cheruby little face too, smiling and giggling. On one wall I have a hanging rack of sorts, and from it is dangling a little purse I owned. I think it was white. We’re trying to get my brother to walk, and for some reason, I’m not sure why, we hand him the purse. He’s fascinated with it. We drape it over his shoulder, and tell him to “go show mommy”. And he walks all the way to the kitchen, to show mommy my purse. His first real long walk. All the way down the hallway, into the kitchen. I remember we called our next door neighbors over too, so they could see him walk, but if memory serves, he promptly sat his butt down, and refused to get up once they got there. Thanks for this question Sognatrice. I’d forgotten these moments until now. Hard to imagine them now when my brother is 24 now.

From the BarnGoddess: Who was your favorite teacher and why?

This is an easy one too. My favorite teacher was Sra. Julia. She was my first through fourth grade teacher in Portugal. She was my first teacher (I never attended kindergarden), and in Portugal, your teacher moved through the grades with you, until you reached 5th grade, I think. So, I was in her class all through elementary school, before we left for the U.S. She was a good teacher, and I loved her and respected her. She and her kids would come to my birthday parties, and I would go to theirs. We corresponded via letters for years after I moved here. And when I went to Portugal (almost 10 years ago) I looked her up and visited her. I can’t really give you a more specific reason why she was my favorite, as I was so young, but she’s always held a special place in my heart.

From JoyT: Tell me about a time you got really mad. It doesn't have to be yelling at anybody, I mean it can if that's what you want to share, but it can be that someone made you so mad you stuck your head in a pillow and screamed your lungs out.

I’ll tell you a tale of a young girl with a HUGE temper. It’s been a very long time since I’ve gotten “stick my head in a pillow and scream” mad. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve really mellowed out quite a bit, and I may get mad, but overall, I’ve learned to process it, and not let it eat at me.

That said, for my most recent “mad as hell” situation, read my post about how much Comcast SUCKS (by the way, they still suck, and I have more reasons to add to why, but I'm just let it go for now).

But, instead of taking the easy way and just telling you to read that story, I’ll give you another tale. This one goes back, way back to when I was about 11 or 12 years old. When I tell you I had a short fuse, and a dangerous temper back then, I’m actually being quite kind to myself. I was a timebomb waiting to explode. There are several stories of my flipping out and completely losing it as a young girl. But one that for some reason sticks out in my mind is this one. When my parents first moved us to the U.S., we came with my aunt and uncle and my cousins, Gangsta, who was my boy cousin, and about 3 years younger than I, and his sister, Black Sheep, who was one year older than I. We spent a lot of time at my grandparents’ house, and although we played a lot, we didn’t always get along fantastically.

At this particular time, my cousin “Gangsta” was probably 9 or so. I can’t for the life of me remember what it was that we were fighting about this time. It could have been any number of things. But here’s what I do remember. My grandmother’s house was one of those that was sort of “circular” in that you could walk around the entire floorplan, in a circle, from the kitchen, to the hallway, to the living room, to the dining room, back to the kitchen. Get the picture? Perfect for kids to run in circles. Perfect for me, very angry at Gangsta for whatever reason, to chase him around and around, screaming that I was going to kill him. Loud enough that our parents, who were in the basement, came running upstairs to see what the racket was all about. By the time they reached the upstairs, I had Gangsta on the floor, hands around his neck, telling him I was going to kill him.

I was a violent little thing, huh? Thankfully, I wasn’t very strong, so doubt I would have caused any serious damage before the parents showed up. But I’ve never forgotten this particular incident, because it left one of those ugly marks on my subconscious. But for the record, he probably deserved it. Ask me about the time I bit my other boy cousin…he definitely deserved it that time. I’m just saying.

From Beckie: Tell us about your earliest memory in the USA, not in the USA.

My earliest memory in the USA is actually from the day I arrived in the U.S. I think the memory stands out so vividly in my mind because it comes with a really huge sense of dĂ©jĂ  vu. Let me explain. I was 9 years old when we arrived in the U.S. My grandparents along with their best friends (who would become my brother’s godparents), came to the airport to pick us up. Because there were so many of us (my parents and I, and my brother, as well as my uncle, aunt and my two cousins), and lots of luggage, we were split into several cars. I don’t remember who else was in the car we were in, but mom and I were driven home by my brother’s godfather.

While riding away from Boston, away from Logan Airport, we were looking out the windows, taking it all in. Our first views of America, land of the free. It was dark out, but the city lights and skyline were beautiful and amazing. And then, a strange sensation filled me and I turned to my mother and said “mom, I feel like I’ve been here before, I’ve seen this”. And of course mom said “no, you couldn’t have, honey”. But the feeling was so intense, and in fact, I knew that just over that hill, would be that building…and sure enough, there it was. It only lasted a moment, but it was probably the most intense dĂ©jĂ  vu moment I’ve experienced in my life. My first time in a brand new country, and it seemed so familiar to me; guess it was meant to be home after all.

My earliest memory not in the USA? I had to think about this one for a bit. If it is not the earliest, it is one of the earliest. It is one of those memories of an event that might have been embarrassing at the moment it happened, but, I have very fond memories of that day. I was 3 years old, and taking a ballet class. My ballet teacher was a fierce French woman. We might have been 3 year olds, but you did not mess around in her class. Wearing our little leotards we did plies and pas de deux. This particular day, me and my little friend were being a bit rambunctious. My little friend decided she would ask to go to the restroom, as an excuse to get out of class for a bit, and I jumped in, saying I too needed to go.

All too familiar with our antics, Madame said no. But the thing is, I really needed to go. So, I went. Right there. In class. On the pretty ballet floors. In my little leotard. But because class was not over yet, and I didn’t have a change of clothes, I was brought back to a room with all these beautiful ballet costumes, and was put in a pretty pink leotard with a tutu. (I’m sure this probably also had something to do with trying to get me to stop crying, and to keep me from being teased mercilessly, but I can’t confirm that).

The truth is, it worked. I felt like the prettiest girl there, the only one in a tutu, and instead of being teased, I was envied. I’m sure all the other girls were wishing they’d been the ones unable to control their bladders. I don’t remember much else from that day, but instead of it being a terrible memory, I get tender flashbacks of pink suits and tutus when I think of it.

And there you have it...that's it for this edition of Q&A's. I have one batch of questions left, and am working on those answers.

You Asked for It - Part 3 - Hypothetically Speaking

A while back I participated in an interview meme, and from that grew the idea that I should let you, my readers, ask me questions that I could answer in future posts. I've had quite a few of those questions sitting in a file waiting to be answered, so, today, I answer some more.

The following are a collection of questions having to do with hypothetical situations.

Frigga asked:

If you never had to worry about money, how would you spend your time?

I already do a lot of the things that I would do if I never had to worry about money. I would just do them more often, and for longer periods of time. And I’ll tell you right now, I’m not one of those people who say that even if they didn’t have to work, they still would, because they would go crazy without working or some other b.s., screw that, if I didn’t have to work for need of money, you wouldn’t find me working ONE DAY. That is not to say, however, that I’d lounge around all day watching television and eating bon bons (does anyone really eat bon bons? What the hell are bon bons anyway?). How would I fill my days then? Well, there would be some television watching sure, because I really do enjoy my shows. But there would also be a lot more writing. I might even try my hand at freelancing and trying to get published in magazines or some such, because I’ve always wanted to do that. And I would travel. Oh, would I travel. There are so many places in the world I’d love to see before I die. If money weren’t an issue, I’d travel and then maybe write about the places I’ve traveled to. OH and pictures. Having discovered this new love of photography, I’d spend a whole lot of time taking pictures, and traveling places to take pictures. And I’d probably volunteer somewhere, because I truly do love the feeling you get when you help others. Maybe I’d take on another “little sister”, as mine is a teenager now and WAY too busy for me. (ask me about how many weekends in a row we’ve made plans that she’s cancelled because she was hanging out with friends, or sleeping, or whatever…ah, teenagers). OH, and here’s something you might not expect me to say…I’d spend my time being a mom. Because very honestly, the ONLY reason I have not begun planning for and starting the process of figuring out how I can adopt a child, is because I can’t even begin to pretend I could afford it. Not only the adoption, but single motherhood as well. Although not easy, I know I could handle being a single mother from the emotional, physical, and factual side of things. But financially? Yeah, that’s a whole other issue, isn’t it? So, you see...I could find a whole lot of things to do if money weren't an issue.

Frigga also asked:

If you could be famous and super talented in any of the performing arts, which would you choose?

This is a really easy one for me. Dance. Hands down, no question about it, dance. I always wanted to be a dancer, and to be able to do it professionally, and be well known for it would be such a bonus. Of course, dance alone does not make someone famous, you need to either marry a celebrity (a la Kevin Federline or Chris Judd who married J-Lo), or become a well known choreographer. Or, you hire some damn good record producers and put out an album of mediocre music that you balance out with amazing dance routines onstage. Yeah, that would be fun!

From Qualcosa di Bello:

On an absolutely perfect day what would you be doing? (go crazy...)

The “Go crazy” portion of this story leads me to assume that this is not a “realistic” absolute perfect day, it’s a perferct, perfect day…so…what would I be doing? It would start off by waking up to the sound of the ocean outside. But I don’t live by the ocean, you say? This is true, but on an absolutely perfect day, I’d be somewhere in the Caribbean, or some other tropical beach area. So, I wake up with the sounds and the smells of the ocean. The window is open, and I can feel the sea breeze. I lounge in bed for a while longer with a great book. Then I make my way to the beach, for a swim, and to lounge in the sun for a while. Someone hands me a little umbrella drink, and then my best friends join me for an afternoon of sunning and chatting. We drink, we laugh, we swim, we tan. Then we head in to get ready for lunch. After lunch, we go on an excursion, perhaps to do a little shopping, or maybe for some horseback riding, swimming with some dolphins, snorkeling? Then it’s back for showers and getting ready for a night out on the town. We have a dinner of luxurious tastes and flavors, and then hit a local hotspot for a little dancing. While dancing, I catch the eye of a sexy local, and we dance the night away. Maybe a stroll on the beach, and a kiss under the moonlight, and then we say goodnight. Ah, perfecto.

Or, I could just spend the day shopping in my local mall with one of my girlfriends, have lunch with my parents, dinner with another friend, and an evening on my couch, with a glass of wine, and a good movie. That’s pretty perfect too.

Check out other questions I've been asked and have answered here, here and here, and stay tuned, I have more answers coming soon.

Tag, I'm it!

I was tagged quite a long time ago by Ana at Eclectic Closet to do the 7 Random Things About me MeMe. Since I'd just done this same meme as well as the extensive 200 Things About Me posts right around the time I was tagged, I decided to hold onto this one for a later date. Well, hey now, it's a later date!

The Rules: 1) List 7 random facts about myself, 2) tag 7 people, and 3) leave a comment on their blog letting them know.

1. I'm can't wait to see the movie "27 Dresses". This is because I am that girl. I have been a bridesmaid 5 times, but have actually been asked to be a bridesmaid 7 times. Those two other times? I had to gracefully bow out of one very early on due to lack of finances, and the other wedding was called off. When previews for "27 Dresses" started showing up, all my friends started joking that this movie is totally about me, the eternal bridesmaid. Go ahead, you can laugh, I do.

2. When I was young, I suffered serious separation anxiety from my parents. They would go out to a movie and leave me at home with my grandmother (who lived with us, and who I loved dearly) and I would cry the entire time until they got home. This lasted pretty much until I was in first grade, and the first day of school I cried the whole day because I was away from home. I think there are still remnants of that left in me, I can never go too long without talking to my parents, something doesn't feel right if I do.

3. Even though I've never really given serious thought to being a mother, knowing that it'll happen one day, whether biologically or through adoption, but not focusing too heavily on it...I've already picked out my daughter's first and middle names. And no, I won't share them with anyone until the time comes.

4. I almost hate to admit it, but I'm a little sad today about the news of actor Heath Ledger's death. I only watched Brokeback Mountain recently, and I thought he was amazing in it, and found him to be a fantastic actor. The reason I say I hate to admit it is that as much as I you want to step away from the "Hollywood" stuff, it's always been one of my guilty pleasures, so when something tragic like this happens, I get all wrapped up in it. The fact that he has a little girl makes this one heartbreaking, and my prayers go out to his family and friends.

5. I have written more poetry and short stories and other creative works since starting Creative Karina last year, than I have in the 5 or 6 years prior to that. I had some crazy writer's block for all that time, and really believed that my life as a writer was done, that I wouldn't get it back. I'm so relieved that I seem to have found my muse again, and am extremely proud of the work I've created recently.

6. I'm wearing white pants today. They are "winter white", and The Nazi this morning said I looked "Springy" and that annoyed the crap out of me. Doesn't she know what winter white is? At times like this I miss working in the city, where fashion was actually something people appreciated. I'm a fashion fanatic and get annoyed that noone around here gets it.

7. I still haven't had a pb&j sandwich...EVER...

Well, there you have it. Random enough for you? Now to tag seven others.

I'm going to go with:

1. Frigga (because she always seems so happy when she gets tagged);
2. LilMouse (because then I can learn some about her);
3. The Ex (because, although I'm pretty sure she hates being tagged, and will probably ignore my tag and/or complain that I tagged her, I think her answers could be hillarious with her wry sense of humor);
4. Beckie (because she just came back from a short blogging break, so I figure I'd give her something to write about on those days she doesn't feel like coming up with her own topic);
5. Jannis (because I also want to know more about her and her travels throughout Spain);
6. Isolda (because she's new to blogging, and a very good friend of mine, so I want to get her "out there");
7. Wicked H (because she's a busy bee, so a meme might be something she'll enjoy doing right now).

I know some folks hate memes, so if you don't want to do, then hey, don't do it. ;-) Trust me, I won't be offended, I just wanted to throw it out there.

Now, Whisper Wednesday has begun at The Firm once again, so I'm going to close my office door and turn up my music. You all have a great day, won't you?

You asked - Part 2 - The Inner Me Edition

Today I answer some more of your questions. I answered the first batch here and had so much fun answering all your silly questions. But you all had more than just silly questions, you had some pretty deep ones too. In today's post, I'm digging into what makes me...well...me.

Frigga asked:

"What are your thoughts on the lottery?"

I don’t give the lottery much thought, actually. I’m one of those people that says “Oh, I’d love to win the lottery”, but knows I never will, mostly because I don’t play. Haha. Seriously, though, I don’t play because I’m not a lucky person when it comes to gambling, or winning things. I could count on the fingers of one hand the number of times I’ve won anything based on luck. If it is a prize based on talent, knowledge, trivia, or accomplishing a specific task, then I have as good a chance (if not better depending on the challenge at hand) as most people. But if it is a prize based solely on luck of the draw, count me out. I’ll go to a casino with a group of 6 friends, for example, and I will bring my allotted $50 (I never spend more, it is not worth it). Within the hour, my $50 will be gone, and I’ll be benched, watching everyone else play. My friends, be who they may, will invariably come home having tripled their money, I’ll come home empty handed. I will walk in a store with two other people and we’ll each buy a scratch ticket…they’ll both win, I will not. I am one of the only people I know who’s been to Vegas, seriously enjoyed herself, and spent less than $10 actually gambling. And most of that was spent on the nickel slots while waiting for my free drinks. Seriously, I don’t win at things. Therefore, I don’t play. I might as well open my car window while I’m driving and fling the dollar bills out as I go. Same return. Once in a blue moon, if the lottery prize is large enough, I’ll give in and buy a ticket. I think I do this mostly so I can participate in the “what would I do with the money?” conversations. But I’m not a gambler, and thankfully, I don’t have an addictive personality, so I don’t feel the need to keep trying. Besides my personal feelings about myself gambling? My feelings are that if you can afford the tickets, and it makes you happy to fantasize you will win, then by all means, have at it. Somebody’s got to win it, right? I don’t have many thoughts on the political repercussions of the lottery. It’s just not something I’ve given much thought to.

She also asked: "Would you be more, or less, stressed out if cell phones didn't exist?

I’m not sure. I’d probably be more stressed, because as I mentioned in Fun Monday a few weeks ago, my cell phone has become a sort of security blanket for me. Being that I am single, and spend a large portion of my time alone, my cell phone gives me a certain sense of security. I’m never completely alone as long as my cell is with me. If I’m feeling unsafe, I call someone to keep them on the phone with me and keep me company until that feeling passes. If I’m lost, or the car breaks down, I call for help. If something interesting happens, I can have someone to share it with instantly on the other end of the line. If I’m feeling lonely, the cell phone, and whoever I call, can keep me company. If some freak is trying to talk to me, I can grab the phone and appear distracted, so they leave me alone…I’ve even been known to fake a conversation with my non-existent husband or boyfriend, to ward off unwanted attention. Therefore, for me, my cell phone offers a level of comfort. My cell does not stress me out. If I don’t want to be reached, I turn it off, or I don’t answer it. It’s easy. The only time cell phones may add stress to my life is when others are using theirs in ways that irk me. As in, when store clerks are too busy talking about their sex lives with their friends on their cell phones, and don’t notice that they’ve rung up my shoes twice, or when the idiot behind me in traffic is so into his conversation that he almost drives into me as I stop at a stop sign. Or by far, the biggest cell phone pet peeve, the inconsiderate jerks who insist on using their cell phones in a movie theatre. But for the most part, I ignore these idiots, and don’t let them get the best of me. And for me, the benefits of having a cell phone, far outweigh the negatives. The thought of losing my cell phone now that I’ve become accustomed to having one…oooh, yeah, my blood pressure just went up a bit…

Julia asked a fantastic question:

Have you ever suffered from anxiety? Or do you have a phobia?

I’ve never suffered from anxiety. Like most people, I’ve had moments of high anxiety, and even slight panic attacks, but never anything that would qualify as anxiety in the clinical sense. As far as phobias, however, I have two major ones, neither of which really fit into any actual “named phobias”. I have this unreasonable fear of “ledges”. It’s not exactly a fear of heights, because I can be in high places, and as long as there’s a fence, a window, a barrier of some sort, I’m okay. My fear is more a fear of falling over a high edge. It doesn’t even have to be that high either. If I sit on a wall, say a 6 foot wall, and someone makes a sudden movement, that panic feeling, quickening heart beat, breath catching, hands sweaty feeling, instantly overtakes me. And it’s not with just me either. I remember going to the grand canyon and I was having mild panic attacks watching others stand so close to the edge…the fear of them falling over was overwhelming. It's a strange phobia to suffer, because it's not limited to your typical "scary" locales, I can sufferit at any time, anywhere there is some sort of "edge" someone could lean over...scary. By the way, I wrote the answer to this question last week, and then I went to bed, and proceeed to have an extremely frightening dream about exactly this fear. I even wrote a poem about it for last week's "Writer's Island".

My other fear is harder to explain. It has to do with water, but it’s not exactly a fear of drowning. I can swim, be out in open water, in a pool or the ocean, in a boat, and I’m not afraid of water, I’m not afraid of drowning. My fear is very specific…I cannot in any way shape or form stick my head under water. This does not include running water, such as showers, but still water. Whether it be the ocean, a pool, or my bathtub, I cannot stick my head under water. I just can’t do it. There is no talking me into it. There is no holding my hand and telling me you are right there…there is NO Way. I panic immediately and hyperventilate. But the minute I lift my head up, I’m fine. I can float on my back with my ears in the water, no problem. I can even snorkel with goggles on and something to breathe out of (though that took some doing), but sticking my head under water and letting go of that control? CAN’T DO IT, WON’T DO IT. This stems from being thrown off an inner-tube when I was a child and getting stuck under it for a few moments (seconds really), but I just cannot do it. I don’t’ think I’m going to drown, I don’t think anything bad will happen, it is not rational, it just is.

And LilMouse(Jill) really made me think with her request: Tell me 5 fundamental things that make up your life/character, etc.

Wow. That’s quite a question. Fundamental, basic, essential, that’s a loaded question.

1. Easily the first one is family. I would not be anything if it were not for my family. Everything I have accomplished, everything I believe in, everything I am, has its roots in my family and my upbringing. I have the two most amazing parents a person could ask for. Life was not always perfect, and our relationships were not always as solid as they are today, but they have always had my brother and I, and our futures, at the forefront of everything they’ve done. Now that I’m an adult, my parents are my friends, my mother, without question, my best friend. My relationship with them, with my brother, and on a lesser level, with other members of my extended family, is at the root of my purpose for being.
2. My independence. I think something that really defines my character is my ability to be alone. Unlike most of my female friends I don’t mind being alone. In fact, I sort of thrive on it at times. It brings me a certain amount of strength to know that I CAN be alone, and be okay with that. It’s not just being alone in terms of not having a man in my life, it’s the ability to be alone in general. To live alone, to shop alone, to travel alone, but to not feel lonely. To make decisions about my future, such as buying my own place, alone. To figure out how to fasten a bracelet or zip up a dress without someone to help me. Bit things, little things, all signs of my independence, all make up an essential element of my character.
3. My relationship with people. On the flip side, another fundamental characteristic of mine is the ease in which I make friends. I will talk to anyone, young, old, male, female. I have made some amazing friends in the strangest of places, on a train for example. I think I can be highly approachable, so it makes it easy for folks to open up to me. Complete strangers will tell me their lifes woes, or their greatest successes, and I don’t mind either, I’ll listen, I’ll advise, I’ll celebrate with them. I truly feel that “people person” is a fantastic way to describe me, I love people, and am comfortable around them, love to study them, get to know them, be part of their lives.
4. My creativity. Whether it’s writing, taking pictures, or just putting together outfits, creativity is a huge part of who I am. I don’t do anything without trying to add some sort of creative flair to it, and I’m known by friends and family as the one who can add a little extra special “something” to a letter, an outfit, a gift.
5. My faith. I’m not a highly religious person, but I’m a supremely spiritual person. Without getting too deeply with my issues with organized religion, I’ll just tell you that for the most part, it doesn’t work for me. That said, I believe in God, and have a faith that travels with me no matter where I am. I see God in everything I lay my eyes on. I’m one of those people that can see the colors on the leaves of a tree and be amazed at God’s touch. Without my faith, I’m not really sure how I’d make it through life, and am thankful I don’t have to find out. I don’t preach, and very rarely do I even discuss my faith with others, unless the topic comes up, but I live it every day, and it shapes who I am in every way.

And there you have it. Thank you all for your very insightful questions. I still have about 10 more of your questions to answer...stay tuned, I'm working on those.

You Asked For It

Before NaBloPoMo began, I asked for some help from you, my dear readers. I wanted to be sure I wouldn't run out of blog fodder, so I gave you the chance to ask me anything you'd always wanted to know. I promised to answer all questions, and boy, did you give me some doozies.

Today I wanted to answer some of them, so without further ado, today I give some of the easier and even sillier questions:

Pam wanted to know all about the photo on the header up there...look up...yeah, that one. She said:

"So my question for you is, what is the background on that photo? Who? What? Where? When? Don't bother with Why? -- I mean, duh -- it's a beach. Why not?"

This is an easy one. The photo for my header was taken this past summer at Hampton Beach, in Hampton, New Hampshire. Some more photos from that day can be found here. Unfortunately there isn’t a rather exciting story to go with it. My friend Shopaholic and I made a trip out to the beach that day, for some walking around and relaxation. It was actually late in the day when we arrived at the beach, so we just strolled around, took a seat on some blankets and watched the ocean waves dance upon the shore. I took many pictures that day, just playing with the different settings of my digital camera, trying to capture the waves breaking, and the sea gulls swooping in for a kill. There were two little boys off to the side (you can see one of them, as well as Shopaholic in the above photos), in gleeful hysterics every time a wave would reach them. Fully clothed, as it was later and cooler out, they were soaked by the end of it all. I’ve always felt the sound of the ocean to be calming and can almost equate a trip to the beach, in the early evening hours, when it is quiet, and less crowded, with going to church. God is ever more present in those moments. Nature to me is a manifestation of God’s presence like few other things can be. The ocean, in all it’s awesomeness and infinite mystery, one of His greatest examples of his presence. Anyway, I’m not really sure what it is about the waves and feet, but I’ve seen this same type of photo on several blogs in my travels. It seems that when you are at the beach, with a pedicure, and a camera, you can’t help but take a picture of your toes. There’s something romantic about this pose. It’s a “look at me, lounging and relaxing” sort of thing…a bird’s eye view (or in this case, the photographer’s eye view) of what they see as they are sitting, taking it all in. I have a similar shot I took at the lake a few months ago. And I don’t even like my feet. I was one of those girls who wouldn’t wear open toed shoes for the LONGEST time (I now live in them all summer long). GO figure.

Frigga had a whole slew of great questions, among them, were a few not so serious ones, let's do those first:

If you were driving in your car, by yourself, with the windows rolled up, just rocking out to your music, and suddenly you were stung by a bee right in your jugular, what would you do?
UH…well, I don’t know. This might be one of those situations to which you don’t really know how you’d react until it actually happens. But I’m not one to freak out about bugs in general. I’m not a fan of spiders, but even they don’t freak me out as much as they used to, so I don’t think I’d panic. However, I’m not a fan of pain, and if I remember correctly, bee stings are quite unpleasant. I’m sure there would be a moment of “OH SHIT”, and perhaps even a quick turn of the wheel, or slam of the breaks, or something equally instant, but then I’d probably safely make my way over to the side of the road, and nurse my wounds with whatever I could find…either that, or suffer miserably until I could get home and nurse my wounds properly. OH, and I would no doubt grab my cell phone and call everyone I know to bitch about my misfortune.

So if you had a 3rd eye, where would you like it to be located?

Random much Frigga? Haha. I’m going to go with the back of my head, because who doesn’t want to know what’s going on when they turn their backs? The thing is, I’d want it to be hidden. Not only because then I wouldn’t look like a complete freak, but because then people wouldn’t know I had it there, so I could totally know stuff they didn’t know I know…you know?

If you could only eat three foods for the rest of your life, which three would you choose?

I’m sure I’d be a miserable human being, that I can guarantee you, but okay, three food. I’m assuming by three foods you meant three items, as opposed to three “meals”, so that’s how I’ll answer.

1. chocolate, because don’t tell me I’d get sick of it, it is chocolate after all, I’ll choose too much over none at all any day;

2. eggs, because there are so many different ways to make eggs, that at least there would be some variety.

3. I guess if I say fruit, I’m being too general right? Fruit salad. Yeah, there you go, fruit salad. Then I’d get some vitamins, and proteins and things. And I could pick and choose which fruits to eat daily, so I wouldn’t get sick of any one fruit.

Who am I kidding? I wouldn’t survive a month.

Same question, but with beverages?

This one is much easier. I might miss certain things, but I could easily survive without much effort on even one beverage alone.

1. Water. Nice mountain fresh, spring water. I LOVE water. There is nothing like an ice cold glass of water.
2. Coffee. I could do without it, but if I have three choices, I’ll take my caffeine in the morning please. (does adding milk or creamer constitute two beverage? Because I’d rather not drink it black, but I could)
3. White wine. This one for social events.
I don’t drink juices or sodas or anything else really. When I’m thirsty, I drink water, when I’m socializing, I have a glass of wine or a martini, in the morning I drink coffee.

Along the same lines, from Jannis:

You are banished to a deserted island. What 1 food would you take with you? What drink?
Hmmm…well, let’s see, since I’m on a deserted island, I’m going to assume that I could find fruit, and a fresh water source (Hey, we’re being hypothetical, I’m giving myself some leeway), so…I’m going to go with chocolate, because oh man, I’d die without it. And hmm…drink…a nice white wine, because besides water, I don’t really drink much else (in terms of sodas and juices, etc.), and a nice glass of wine here and there would be nice to enjoy the ocean breeze with.

And from Min: (I liked Jannis' question, but I want to make it harder. If you were banished to a desert island and you could only take one of three things, what would it be:
1. A Bible
2. A case of tequila
3. Johnny Depp

These are my three choices? I thought it would be harder, but of the three choices, hands down, Johnny Depp. I wouldn’t need the bible to pray, especially surrounded by all that nature on a desert island…I could find God in so many other ways, and I’ve never been a fan of tequila. So, Johnny Depp!..yeah...

oh and what do you know of the reconstruction of the economy in post-revolutionary France?

UH, yeah…not so much. And I’m afraid I’m not really all that interested in looking it up. I didn't know this was going to be a history lesson Min. ;-)

And there you have it! There were lots of other questions asked, and I'll be posting answers to those in the next few days as well...stay tuned.

Interview with a Blogger - The Second

It's been so long that you may not remember, but a while ago I was interviewed by my fellow blogger Frigga. You can read that interview HERE.
In a fun new meme going around the blogosphere another blogger asks you five questions, you post them on your blog, and offer to interview any of your readers. The rules can be found in the original interview post.

Per the meme, a few bloggers asked to be interviewed by yours truly, so I set to asking the really tough questions.

Here are some of the interviews I've done that have been answered, please do go check them out:

1. Ms. Frou Frou
2. Joy T
3. Annie
4. JennieBoo
5. Frances

There is also one more coming, but I'm not saying anything about Lisa not having been able to do hers yet, because yours truly is LONG overdue on responding to one herself.

See, after Ms. Frou Frou answered my questions, I decided to request that I be interviewed once again, by her this time. She sent me the questions quite a while back, and I just couldn't find the time to answer them. But here I am, answering them finally.

1. As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? And what happened to that aspiration?

As a child I think I was about as "all over the place" as I am now, therefore, there were several different things I wanted to be. The first thing I remember was that I wanted to be a ballerina. Seriously, how cute was I?? I took ballet as a very young girl, and really wanted nothing more than to be in the pretty tutus dancing around to Swan Lake. When we moved to an area where there were no local ballet classes, mom signed me up for gymnastics. Look at those lines! A new love was born, and now I wanted to be a gymnast when I grew up. With dance recitals and all that stuff, I just knew one day I'd be a dancer. Look at how serious I am!

At one point I also remember thinking/saying I wanted to be a doctor. The sight of blood, and the fact that I was NOT a fan of that sight quickly set me straight on that aspiration.

Yet another move, this time to the U.S., and the fact that my parents couldn't afford to send me to gymnastics or ballett, also put an end to that dream. But the dream of being a dancer was one I would carry with me forever.

As I got older, my dreams became a bit more realistic, and my love for the written word took over. I wanted to be a writer when I grew up. I even majored in Communication and Journalism in college with the idea that this would be what I would do for a living...write.

Unfortunately, jobs are scarce and low paying in the writing field, so I had to find other options, and that is why I ended up in the legal field instead.

As far as what happened to those childhood aspirations? I still want to be a dancer, I'll always want to be a dancer, but I realize that one will always be a pipe dream. I still want to be a writer, and that, I've been focusing my energy on a bit more. I have no interest in ever being a doctor, however.

2. Who was your first crush, or the first crush you're comfortable sharing?

Wow, for this I have to go back...way back...back into time. ;-) Who was my first crush? I'm sure I had little crushes in elementary school in Portugal, but none stand out for me. The first one that really stands out in my mind was my crush when I first arrived in the U.S., in the middle of the year in 4th grade. Coming into a new country, with a new language I wasn't at all versed in, I attended a bi-lingual school for that last half of 4th grade. I was "partnered up" with a boy who was to help me acclimate. His name was Julio. Julio was adorable, and nice, and really helpful to me in this brand new world I was in. Julio sat next to me in class, and translated what the english speaking teacher would say. He was also the class hottie that all the girls liked, so I felt sort of special that he was "my" class partner. The following year we went to a secondary school, and Julio and I would again be in the same class. But this time, it would be me who was helping him with his school work. (What can I say, I was a pretty smart kid). Julio and I were always friends, and flirtatious, but he never moved past the "crush" stage. Years later, while in high school, I would run into Julio again, and he was still a hottie, but the spark fizzled out soon after, we had nothing in common. Still, I'll always remember Julio with a fondness reserved only for those first crushes. I wish I had a picture for this one, but searches through old photo albums found me nothing! Alas!

3. If you didn't need to earn a living, and could do whatever you wanted to do, regardless of income, what would it be?

Well, some of this was answered in question one, but I'd love to dance professionally in some form (and not in a stripper pole sort of form, just for the record). I'd also be able to just write full time. If income wasn't an issue, I could spend my days writing out all the things my mind is constantly telling me about. I'd love to travel the world, writing about what I see, photographing what I see, and just experiencing all the sites. Also, if earning a living wasn't a worry, I'm pretty sure I'd be ready to adopt a child or two, and provide a loving home to someone who does not have one. Expand upon what I've been able to do through Big Brother Big Sister, and make a difference in a child's life, by bringing them into mine.

4. If they were going to make a movie of your life, who would you cast as you, and why? You can cast other people as well if you want to!

OOOOh, this is such a fun question! Believe it or not, I've never actually thought this one out. Let's see...if we're going on appearances sake, I really don't know, because I don't think there's any particular "actress" out there that I look like. However, I decided to go to Myheritage.com and find out what they said. This is what I came up with:

Not a bad cast of characters! I think I'd choose either Christina Ricci, because I think she could nail my sarcasm and wit, or Elizabeth Shue, because watching Adventures in Babysitting, I always wanted to be her. "Don't F$#% with the babysitter!" (okay, I realize that when I post this, Elizabeth Shue gets cut out, but I don't know how to fix it, and I'm at work and don't really have the time to try and figure it out...so...just trust me on this! haha)

Casting other people could be fun...but I'd probably get carried away and never finish this post, so I'm going to save that for another time, I think.

5. Silly one to finish... are you a scruncher or a folder?

I'm a roller.

This was fun! Do go check out the interviews linked above and tell them I sent you!

Interview with a blogger

There’s this great new meme going around and I just HAD to take part in it. Basically, a blogger interviews you, and you post the answers on your own blog. Then you invite your readers to volunteer to be interviewed, and you interview THEM, and they post it on their blog, and then they invite their readers to….well, you get the point. Can you just see how fun this can get? Because, then, when you post your answers, and ask your readers if they want to be interviewed, I can go and ask to be interviewed again, and this can just be blog fodder for ever and ever…and you’ll get to find out those things about me you’ve always wanted to know…or something…okay, anyway…

My buddy Frigga recently participated with this post. Of course, I happily volunteered to be interviewed. Here are her questions, and my OH SO witty answers. Ahem, right…let’s get on with it.

It took me quite a while to answer these, and if you've been reading my blog for any amount of time, you know that A)I break rules, and B)I'm very long winded...so...enjoy, it's a long one:

1. Let's get the obvious out of the way - why do you blog?

WELL…the timing on this couldn’t be more perfect, because I just answered this yesterday in my Fun Monday entry. However, the short answer is this: I blog because I’m a writer by nature, and need an outlet for my creativity, even if it's just in the form of my random thoughts. I blog because I always have a million things zooming around in my head that I want to explore and elaborate on. I blog because it’s fun to see how people react to my zany thoughts, and get other opinions on things I wonder about. I blog because there is this insanely cool world in the blogosphere that I’ve now discovered and just CANNOT get away from. I blog because it is just the coolest thing EVER and I love it. I blog because I've always been a bit of an attention whore, and love the attention my blog can get me. Well, so much for a short answer, right? But there it is...I blog because it seriously is one of the greatest ways I've encountered of getting to be ME.

I Blog, Therefore I Am

2. Okay Ms. Single - what are you looking for in a man?

Frigga, this is why we get along so well. Because we are obviously on the same wavelength. Again, I just answered this in my Thursday Thirteen post last week. However, the TT was written in fun and humor, and I think some folks actually thought I was serious about wanting each and every one of those things exactly as I requested them. One person even told me my standards were too high...so I’ll be more serious in my answer here. (However, for the record, my standards are pretty damn high...I've been single this long, why should I settle for less than the best?)...okay, okay...

What am I looking for in a man? It would be easier to answer with what I am NOT looking for in a man, because that I know for sure. What I want, I’m not so sure about.

I am looking for someone who is going to come into my life to make it just that little bit...more. I have a good life. Actually, I might even go on and say that I have a great life. I have a good job, make decent money, own my own place, have a wonderful group of friends, a fantastic family, and am not lacking in things to do to keep me occupied. I am truly blessed with my life, and don’t take any of it for granted. I have worked my ass off to get where I am today and have what I have, and don’t ever sell myself short in realizing what I’ve gotten for myself. I am a truly independent soul, and have gotten used to living life on my own. I have learned to be alone without feeling lonely, and I have also learned the art of surrounding myself with great people when I can’t stand to be alone any longer. So, what the hell does any of that have to do with what I’m looking for in a man? It’s easy. I’m looking for someone who is just going to kind of easily FIT into my lifestyle.

Yes, I’m well aware that I’ll have to adapt, compromise, make some changes, all that comes with the territory of relationships. But I am hoping to find someone who won’t require a complete life change from me, because I’m not prepared to do that.

I have taken the time to work on myself, and make myself the best me that I can. I am looking for a man who has taken the time and the effort to do the same with himself. Someone who knows who he is, knows where he is in life, and has a general idea of where he wants to go next. Someone who can and wants to be with me, but at the same time, can and wants to have his own life apart from mine, in the beginning at least. As things progress, that can change. I grew up in a household where my parents do everything together, and I’m not opposed to that…just not yet.

I am looking for a man who doesn’t have a problem with my self-reliance. I’ll still let him open jars for me, but I can open them myself too, and the truth is if he tries to open them for me all the damn time, it's going to piss me off. Okay, maybe not the jars, but you get the point.

I am looking for a man who can make me laugh. This is key. I think life can really suck a lot of the time, so if we can’t laugh about most of it, we won’t make it. A man who can be goofy, and stupid, and ridiculous, but knows when to turn that off and be serious. No grouches though, please, I can’t handle it. Life is too short to be in a bad mood all the time.

I need my man to be intelligent. As I said in my TT, he doesn’t have to be a genius, but if we can’t have serious, intellectual conversations about stuff, then I’ll get bored real soon. I love to argue and debate, and analyze things…I love to do it with others. My man has to be able to do that with me.

I want a man that can make me feel like a woman. This should need no explanation...any woman out there knows exactly what I mean. It's just that feeling you get that no matter how independent and self-sufficient you are, once in a while, you want to just be a lady and your man to be a MAN.

(it wouldn't hurt if he had THAT back? hmmm...)

There are other things as well, he has to love family, because mine is the most important thing in my life. He has to want kids, because I absolutely want them, and have plans of adopting at least one child in my lifetime, whether or not I have some biologically. He has to be employed, and a hard worker, but not be all about work. It would help if he can dance, but as long as he’s willing to get out on the dance floor with me, I don’t even care if he’s any good. Just dance with me.

And two things I will not budge on EVER are the smoking and the drinking. I will unequivocally NOT date a smoker, EVER…I hate the stuff, want nothing to do with it, and will not have it in my house, will not kiss a smoker, YUCK…no thanks.

And alcohol for me can also be a deal breaker. I enjoy a good drink as much as the next person, but I drink socially, and in small quantities. My days of bragging about how many drinks I ingested are far behind me, and I have no plans of going back there. If “going out drinking” is still part of how a man spends his free time, then he’s not the one for me. If he’s “having a few drinks” while he’s out doing other activities, I don’t have a problem with that. I’m not against alcohol, I just don’t want to date an alcoholic (I’ve done it before, it’s not pretty). And please, whatever you do, don’t be one of those assholes who thinks driving with alcohol in your system is okay as long as you don’t get caught. We really won't get along then.

As far as looks go, I’m not really picky. I could tell you the kind of guys I’m attracted to, but the list is long. The truth is that my tastes have broadened from my younger days, and there are several “types” of men that I find attractive. And I honestly believe that personality has a lot to do with it. I’m not saying looks don’t matter, they do; I’m just saying that just like with everything else in my life, I have eclectic tastes.

How about that for a long answer! Hey, you asked.
3. How many shoes do you really have? And what's your favorite pair? And do you really wear all of them? (I know it seems like three, but it's really only one... Never mind that man behind the curtain)

This is definitely three questions, but since they’re about shoes, I won’t complain. Be forewarned, you gave me 3 questions on my favorite topic...you are in for it now.

Okay, at last count (which was at the beginning of the summer) I had 69 pairs of shoes. Shut up, it is not too many!

However, I have since bought at least 6 more pairs, (okay, I’m lying, I’ve probably bought closer to 10 pairs), BUT I have thrown out about 5 pairs as well. (okay, I’m lying again, I still have them, but they are in a bag in my room which is going to goodwill one of these days, seriously!).

I really do wear I’d say about 95% of them. Seriously. Here’s the deal, I have winter shoes, summer shoes and inbetween shoes. My winter shoes consist mostly of boots. My boots are for all occasions. I have stiletto boots I wear to work. I have other boots I wear which are slightly more comfortable for days when there is snow on the ground, but still dressy. I have boots I wear for really crappy weather days. I have casual boots for the weekends, I have sneakers. I have these in all sorts of colors to go with the myriad of outfits I wear. I have shoes. Dress shoes, casual shoes, work shoes, going out shoes, I have these in all colors. I have sandals. Dressy sandals, casual sandals. Flip-flops I have many. Again, in all colors. On average, I wear about 5 or 6 different pairs of shoes in any given week. Some days I will wear two different sets of shoes, depending on what I am doing in the morning, and then again at night. Because my wardrobe is about as extensive as my shoe collection, I can go weeks without wearing the same pair of shoes twice. I do, however, have my staples, which are worn more than any other shoes. These are usually black. My favorite and/or more comfortable black heels, black sandals, black boots, etc.

I do not feel guilty in the slightest because of my extensive shoe collection. I have paid cash for every pair of shoes I own. I have worked hard for that cash, and I choose to spend it on things that make me happy. Shoes make me happy.

I have never spent above $60 on a pair of shoes. And in fact, the ONE pair of shoes that I can think of that I spent $60 on, are the most uncomfortable pair of shoes I own, and I actually am extremely upset about having spent that money on them. Damn shoes…Nine West might just get an angry letter from me about them.

Most of my shoes I buy on clearance. I own several pairs of designer shoes that I have paid a mere $7 for. With deals like that, what sane person can resist? Shut up, I am too sane!!!

I have shoes I have owned for 6 years or longer. So, although my collection is extensive, I’ve been building it for years. Every year I recycle some, and buy new ones to replace them. This is my shoe philosophy: no matter how fat or ugly you are feeling on any given day, the right pair of shoes can always make you feel 100 times better. Try it, you’ll see.

Now, as far as which pair is my favorite. Seriously? That’s like asking a mother which child is their favorite. I can’t possibly answer that question. So, instead, I’ll show you pictures of some of my current favorites that are in heavy rotation in my closet at this time. Enjoy:

4. What movie character most closely represents you in real life? (I'm sorry that's worded kind of funny, but I don't know how to say it more clearly without typing a paragraph... which I've just done. Please ignore everything after that last question mark.) :P

Boy, that’s a toughie…you've got some thought provoking questions here. Can I cheat and use TV Characters too? Well, I'm going to anyway. The first one that popped into my mind was Carrie Bradshaw, from Sex and the City, but that's because I just answered the shoe questions above. haha...

In all seriousness though...this really is a tough one because there are not any movies out there that I can think of with a female who is single and comfortable with it. Most movies about a single woman focus on her desperate need to find a man. This makes it hard for me to identify with most of them, because although I love men, I'm not desperate to have one in my life.

That said, I remember really identifying with Diane Lane's character "Frances" in "Under the Tuscan Sun". I mean, I didn't get to move to a fantastic Villa in Tuscany, but a lot of the same feelings and personality traits of hers mirrored mine. She is one of the few female characters I can think of who was comfortable in her own skin. She kind of had to learn to get there, and it didn't come without all kinds of drama, but when she finally got there, she was a strong woman, who was making choices for herself, without much concern for what the rest of the world thought about her. She didn't fit any particular "mold" that society wants so badly to put us into. That's me. I live my life by my rules, and most of the time my rules are about as far from society's expectations as you can get.

Another one is Julia Robert's character in Mona Lisa Smile. Here was another woman who was just doing her own thing, and not letting societal pressures dictate how she should live her life. I also felt like her role of teaching these young girls that they COULD be independent, and do their own thing, is on a much lesser scale, how I am with my friends. I'm always the one trying to get them to realize that they are valuable members of society all on their own. Apart from the men in their lives.

This is going to make me sound all feminist and crap, so let me throw in a few characters with a more lighthearted representation of me. When I asked a friend how I should answer this question, she told me to say either Romy or Michelle from Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion, because they were fun and stylish and didn't give a crap what anyone thought of them. I love this, I'll go with that. And she added that I'm a little bit Elle Woods from Legally Blonde too...in that I'm more fun than serious, more likely to hang out at some comedy show than a library, but with a sense of style, and even though on the surface I appear fun and carefree (although never ditzy such as Elle), I'm really intelligent and a hard worker, and the results of my work show it.

So, how's that for a long winded answer?

5. And now we've reached gossip time. Please tell us about the worst date you've ever been on.

OOH well...this one also required some serious thought. I have a couple of these as well...the first one I can think of took place when I was still in high school. My friend and I had met some boys from a neighboring city, which was (and still is) known for its crime rate and basic ghettoishness. We thought we were so cool not telling our parents where we were going and hanging out with said boys at their house. Until we went to leave and my car had been broken into, and money had been stolen out of our wallets. Leaving our purses in the car is only one of the many stupid decisions we made that night. I later found out that it had been my own date's brother who had stolen the money, so he could go buy drugs. Yep, that was our last date.

A few years later, during my college years, I attempted to go on a date with a guy I knew from the club circuit. Him and I had known each other for a while, and every time we'd run into each other at the club, we'd hang out all night, but we'd never been on an actual "date". We finally decided to take the plunge, and I bought tickets to catch "The Blue Man Group". (He was to reimburse me for the tickets...think you see where this is heading already? Oh no, it's worse). The plan was that we would meet in a local McD's parking lot, and he would then drive us into the city, where we would have dinner and then watch the show. All was well until he was already 45 minutes late for our meeting time, then arrives and decides he MUST go into McD's to buy a soda, comes back out and realizes he has locked his keys in his car...with the engine running. Cut to two hours later, when a tow truck finally shows up to unlock the car, and we've basically hung out at McD's all night, and I don't even think he bought me dinner...even at McD's. We pretty much called it a night after that, and I never did get my money for those tickets. And no, we never went out again.

Then there was the date I was set up on by a friend. Yes, you can groan now...This was yet another one of those situations where a friend assumes that because you are single, and someone she knows is single, then you two will automatically be a perfect match. For some reason I have yet to figure out, I agreed to exchanging phone numbers with this guy, and for even more inexplicable reasons, after a short telephone conversation, I agreed to have dinner with this guy. Now, I had told my friend prior to the number exchange that I was not looking for an "instant relationship", so for her to please make sure that he was aware of this. She told me this had been claryfied, and he was of the same mindset as I. Great! During our brief telephone conversation, we'd discussed our personal lives, and I'd informed him that I was newly single, and enjoying a bit of that freedom and wasn't looking to get serious with someone right away. Once again, he agreed. Okay, good...right? Yeah.

So, I arrive at the restaurant where we are having dinner and meet him out front. He has put our name in, and we are waiting for a table. He informs me that he has downloaded Alicia Key's "Fallin' to be my ringtone, because he knows I like that song. SERIOUSLY?? Because we have now known each other face to face for a total of 5 minutes. Hmm...okay. Still waiting for our table we begin talking about our individual plans for the upcoming weekend (we are having dinner on a Wednesday night). As I rattle off my extensive plans for the weekend (night out with the girls on Friday, day with my "little sister" on Saturday, blah blah), he stops me and says "Well, what about me? When are you going to make time for me?" Did you hear that? That was my brain doing the tires screeching, putting on the breaks, WHOA NELLY sound... Then our table was called. I spent the remainder of the dinner trying to get my hand back from him so I could use my utensils to eat, and trying to explain to him that marriage was just not part of my plans for that summer. No, I never did go out with him again. My friend did tell me later that he was "heartbroken", and apologized profusely for setting me up with a stalker type, because although I stopped taking his incessant calls, she had to work with him and deal with him asking her repeatedly what was going on in my life. She was actually relieved when she was laid off about a month later.

The most recent bad date I went out on was at least 3 1/2 years ago. This was also my last attempt at online dating, and probably the reason I've been hesitant to try it or any other kind of dating pretty much since then. Here was a guy I'd been chatting with online, and then on the phone with for a while. We were getting along well enough, so decided to have dinner. Now, before I get to dinner, I need to back up and tell you that most of our telephone conversations would either start with him telling me "I just got in from the gym" or end with "I have to get going, I'm heading to the gym". This is very important for you to know.

Also, he had mentioned at one point his recent conversion to Judaism. I didn't particularly have an issue with this, although, in hindsight, I probably should have put more weight on it, because someone who converts to any particular religion in adulthood, is obviously going to have some strong beliefs in that area, and I'm more of a "spiritual" as opposed to "organized religion" type of person.

Anyway, all this background is important because it sets up the punchline. Which is that upon meeting this man, and watching him have to slide sideways into the booth because his ass was too large to fit otherwise, and listening to him try to convert me to Judaism all night, I realized two things. 1. he'd never honestly seen the inside of any gym in America and 2. online dating was just not for me.

And there you have it, me in a nutshell...albeit more of a coconut sized shell...
