Sticky Post - Blogger Comments Issues and Solution

This is a sticky post - please scroll down for newer entries.

So, those of you who visit Blogger blogs, but do not have a blogger blog/ID have probably already noticed that Blogger has disabled your ability to leave your URL when you leave a comment.

And this is probably annoying you to no end.

WELL, it's doubly as annoying for those of us who own blogger blogs, because now we have no way to find you when you leave a comment. NOT cool.

But, instead of getting in a tizzy about it of COMCAST porportions, I decided to do a little research, and I've found out what the story is.

It appears that Blogger is experimenting with adding "OpenID" as a way for non-Blogger bloggers to leave comments. But in the meantime, they disabled the URL feature, while the OpenID thing is in testing stages.

A little more digging, and I figured out how to enable the test version of OpenID on my blog. So, I figured I'd be a good little blogger (Santa, are you reading this?) and share my knowledge with the rest of you.

Here goes. First, log in to blogger using your blogger ID. Then, on the "dashboard" look for the "Help Resources" on the right hand column. There is a "known issues" link. Click that.

The very first entry on that blog explains the issue. Now, click the link in that entry for "blogger in draft". This will bring you back to your dashboard, only with the "blogger in draft" look t it.

On your blog, click the "settings" tag. Now click the "comments" tag. In "Who Can Comment", you should choose "Anyone - Includes Anonymous Users" or "Registered Users - Includes OpenID" both of these will work. Click Save (don't forget to do this, even if you didn't actually make a change to your preference).

And that's it, you are done.

Glad to be of service, y'all!!! ;-)

Thanks Karina for the info. I did this for my Just Write site. I hope they finalize it soon.

BTW, I'm having trouble reading your posts with the red text on green background. I can read the text if I select it. You probably don't have the problem - maybe it looks better on your screen. Plus I have a small screen so maybe that's why.

I'm thinking maybe a lighter red for the text or a darker green for the background. I hope I'm not offending you by this comment.

And thanks for that Blogger info.

No offense at all lissa...whenever I make changes to the blog, I run into issues with the colors because different folks have different color resolutions on their computers...I think I'll switch the font to "white"...that should make it more legible, and still Christmasy...

And you are very welcome for the info.

Thanks for posting this information Karina!
With all these problems with Blogger I am wondering if it is worth jumping ship, but the problem is I don't know where to jump to.

You're such a nice blogger :)

I'm sure Santa will reward you in kind!

That's very nice of you to find that out for folks, the problem is that OpenID is yet to be proved. I got interested in it some time ago, but found there were too many security issues.

I have to admit that with Blogger poor reliability, slow page loads and ridiculous WV, I find myself commenting on fewer and fewer Blogger blogs these days. I rarely comment on blogger blogs that I don't already know.

willowtree said...

Oh yeah, about that earlier comment from lissa, the two most common colour combination that give colour blind people problems are red/green and blue/brown

Yay! I'm sure Santa or one of his little buddies is watching you :D (No, not watching you change or anything, just your good deeds)

I heard google was still hiring...maybe they need you as the common sense person.

Thanks. I stopped using blogger when I switched to a mac and I've been quite upset over the past few days about not being able to leave my current URL.I figured they were trying to boost the number of blogger id's in some kind of run for the metrics. The drop down menu doesn't help me at all. Anyway, hope blogger gets out of beta muy rapido, but they're not the most rapido out there.

I think I need another cup of coffee before I attempt that...

I found my way here from Robin's PENSIEVE. I intend you use your "fix" thanks. e-Mom@Chrysalis

Karina, I applaud you for researching a truly annoying development that I was attributing to corporate competitiveness. Thanks for finding out the real story.

thank you dear... I'm heading over there now!!!!

Thanks so much! I hope it works...I don't want commenters to be frustrated any longer - and I'm such a neophyte. I never have a clue about all this stuff!

you *are* a sweetheart for figuring this one out!

Well, let me try this, because I've been cutting and pasting all morning. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to write in that space, but I'll try my url and see if it works. I hope so, because I've been pulling my hair out and will soon be sporting a cue ball as my head!

Shelly Kneupper Tucker said...

Nope. What I did didn't work. Sorry to experiment on you, but let me try again/

Shelly Kneupper Tucker said...

Nope. That didn't work either. I had an old Google blog, is it trying to sign me in? Do I have to sign out of Google?

You are amazing.
Oh and the camera phone I use on my blog is a Sony Ericsson. It's the same quality as the Fusic.
Take care

riayn, I feel the same way as you do, so I guess I'll be doing some investigating in the next month or so.

Sognatrice, thanks! ;-) I'm sure whatever Santa sees fit to reward me with will be just fine, it's the spirit of Christmas that matters, right?

WT, see, I know nothing about OpenID, so thanks for that info...guess we'll have to see what blogger does, but it is too bad that they're causing so many issues, because I visit some wonderful blogs on blogger, and would hate to see them (or myself, I'll admit) lose readership because of this.

Susan, you made me laugh out loud with that comment about santa watching me change...hahaha As far as google hiring, I hear they're a pretty good company to work for, but I'm if they're turning into a mega conglomorate with "trying to take over the world egos", then I'll pass. ;-)

rwellsrwells, yeah, I've heard the complaint that the drop down menu doesn't work for everyone either...sigh...

frigga, after all the stuff I've been trying to teach myself about blogger this week, I need more than just a cup of coffee...maybe a little bailey's in there?

e-mom, glad you stopped in, come back anytime.

Julia, I don't know if I found the "real" story, but I found the one blogger is telling anyway. ;-)

Pamela, you are welcome, hope it worked.

tiggerlane, I'm not really as versed in this technical stuff either, I'm just really good at research, so I can find the answers, applying them is a whole other story! ;-)

QDB, thanks! ;-) I try.

Shelley, uh...yeah...see, this is where I show my true colors as a non-technical person...I don't really know how to help you beyond what I posted...my knowledge ends with the info I found...sigh...sorry it didn't work for you! :(

Frances, thanks! (that's me blushing). And thanks for the info on the camera phone thing too...I was just curious because you get great quality pics from it, and I wasn't sure if the fusic quality was that good...I'll have to take some more pics and see, but I don't think it is.

Thanks for making it so clear. I was talking about this to a friend on the phone the other day while the plumber from Zap-it Drains was fixing the toilet and he asked me a couple of questions about it when I was off the phone. It was fun to explain it to him.
